Uses

Cefpodoxime / Clavulanic Acid is used for the treatment, control, prevention, & improvement of the following diseases, conditions and symptoms:
•    Bacterial infection
•    Acute otitis media
•    Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
•    Community-acquired pneumonia
•    Chronic bronchitis exacerbation
•    Gonorrhea
•    Lower respiratory tract infections
•    Otitis media
•    Sinusitis
•    Skin and skin structure infections
•    Urinary tract infections

Mechanism of Action and Pharmacology

Cefpodoxime / Clavulanic Acid improves the patient's condition by performing the following functions:
•    Inhibiting the bacterial cell wall synthesis.
•    Inhibiting the growth of bacteria.

Side-Effects

The following is a list of possible side-effects that may occur in medicines that contain Cefpodoxime / Clavulanic Acid. This is not a comprehensive list. These side-effects are possible, but do not always occur. Some of the side-effects may be rare but serious. Consult your doctor if you observe any of the following side-effects, especially if they do not go away.
•    Diarrhea
•    Vomiting
•    Abdominal pain
•    Headache
•    Weakness
•    Fever

Precautions & How to Use

Before using Cefpodoxime / Clavulanic Acid, inform your doctor about your current list of medications, over the counter products (e.g. vitamins, herbal supplements, etc.), allergies, pre-existing diseases, and current health conditions (e.g. pregnancy, upcoming surgery, etc.). Some health conditions may make you more susceptible to the side-effects of the drug. Take as directed by your doctor or follow the direction printed on the product insert. Dosage is based on your condition. Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens. Important counseling points are listed below.
•    Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea
•    Diarrhea is a common problem
•    Hepatic dysfunction
•    Hypersensitivity to penicillins
•    If the drug format is suspension, keep it refrigerated and shake well before using
•    If you develop bloody or watery diarrhea contact your doctor immedately

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Cefpodoxime / Clavulanic Acid is a contraindication. In addition, Cefpodoxime / Clavulanic Acid should not be used if you have the following conditions:
•    Clostridium difficile bacteria related colitis
•    History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with Amoxicillin and Clavulanate
•    Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
•    Penicillin hypersensitivity
•    Pseudomembranous colitis
•    Seizures related to drug
