Description:

Cholecalciferol, also known as vitamin D3 and colecalciferol, is a type of vitamin D found in food and used as a dietary supplement. As a supplement it is used to treat and prevent vitamin D deficiency including rickets.  It is also used for familial hypophosphatemia, hypoparathyroidism that is causing low blood calcium, and Fanconi syndrome. It is taken by mouth.

Uses

Side effects

Excessive doses can result in vomiting, constipation, weakness, and confusion. Other risks include kidney stones. Normal doses are safe in pregnancy. It may not be effective in people with severe kidney disease. After being converted into 1, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D, it works by increasing the uptake of calcium by the intestines. Food in which it is found include some fish, cheese, and eggs. 

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Cholecalciferol / Vitamin D3 is a contraindication. In addition, Cholecalciferol / Vitamin D3 should not be used if you have the following conditions:
• Allergic reactions
• High calcium levels
• Hypersensitivity
• Kidney disease
• Kidney failure
• Kidney stone
• Kidney stones
• Sarcoidosis

Precautions & How to Use

Before using inform your doctor about your current list of medications, over the counter products (e.g. vitamins, herbal supplements, etc.), allergies, pre-existing diseases, and current health conditions (e.g. pregnancy, upcoming surgery, etc.). Some health conditions may make you more susceptible to the side-effects of the drug. Take as directed by your doctor or follow the direction printed on the product insert. Dosage is based on your condition. Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens. Important counseling points are listed below.
• Kidney problems
• Make sure you take 600-1200 mg of calcium per day
• Pregnant, planning to get pregnant or breastfeeding

 

Drug Interactions

If you use other drugs or over the counter products at the same time, the effects of Cholecalciferol / Vitamin D3 may change. This may increase your risk for side-effects or cause your drug not to work properly. Tell your doctor about all the drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are using, so that you doctor can help you prevent or manage drug interactions. Cholecalciferol / Vitamin D3 may interact with the following drugs and products:
• Actinomycin
• Barbiturates
• Calcium
• Cardiac Glycosides
• Cholestyramine
• Glucocorticoids
• Laxatives
• Other vitamins
• Paraffin oil
• Phenytoin
• Rifampicin
• Thiazide diuretics
